tel:+pin - prevent unauthorized use of Lync 2010 Telephones
Telephone Handsets and Conferencing Devices deployed in Corporate and Office environments are susceptible to abuse.
Open Plan Offices have become the standard when designing office space and audio and video conference rooms are now a part of the standard facilities required by organizations. The telephony devices deployed in these environments also often require the ability to place long distance, international or even premium subscription calls in order for the primary user to be able to carry out their daily responsibilities.
Securing the telephony devices in such open areas (and even closed offices with lockable doors) is essential in order to ensure that Cost Accountability is maintained and therefore that each call that is placed (usually to long distance or international numbers) is authenticated and therefore prevents unauthorized personnel (e.g. Cleaners, visitors) from being able to place such calls, even from an extension that is has the capability of doing so.
IDC S.p.A have developed an application for Microsoft Lync 2010 called tel:+pin that is aimed at addressing this exact scenario.
Using tel:+pin organizations can implement positive identification and authorization for calls placed to number destinations of their choice and then apply the requirement accross either the entire organization or selected endpoints such as common area devices.
The solution is currently under field trials and is expected to become publicly available in the first quarter of 2011.
An early release video demo of the end-user experience can be found here.
The tel:+pin datasheet can also be downloaded from here.
