OCS CWA, the necessary evil of Lync 2010 Mobile Device Support

We are all living in a world that becomes increasingly connected as each year goes by, more and more, I am being faced with challenges and questions around mobility support for all the solutions we deliver and what's more is customers are no longer as willing to dictate the devices that will be supported, but rather want to be able to offer their users a range of choices, supporting their preferred mobile endpoints.

OCS has been a core area of focus for me over the past 3 years or so and accordingly I have long had to deal with the questions surrounding the support of these products accross multiple heterogenous mobile device environments. These questions naturally progressed as we moved into the Lync space once the product was launched late last year.

As it currently stands, there is extensive mobile device (and platform) support for OCS 2007, OCS 2007 R2 and Lync Server 2010 and in order to leverage this extensive support there are narurally some considerations you need to make when designing and deploying your infrastructure. You should also be aware that as of now the ONLY supported workloads are Enterprise Presence and Instant Messaging, voice and video support will be added to some clients / devices later in the year when Microsoft release the official clients for the mobile platforms.

In order to maximize the mobile device support for OCS and Lync in your deployment, it is important that you consider deploying both the Edge Server AND a OCS 2007 R1/R2 Comunicator Web Access (CWA) server. The following table summarizes the supportability of mobile devices;
