Import Bulk Contacts into Exchange 2003

If you want to import contacts into Active Directory without the hassle of creating each individual object manually, then this is for you.

We make use of the CSVDE tool shipped with Windows for Importing/Exporting Data from CSV into AD.

Note: The CSVDE tool can ONLY be used to import & export objects to / from CSV files & NOT to update existing objects in the AD. If you want to make changes to existing objects then you have to use the LDIFDE tool.

The Tool to import Bulk Contacts into Exchange 2007 can be found here

Download the tool & follow the Instructions in the ReadMe.

This tool is provided "As-Is" & without any garuntees / warranties, use at your own risk.

I am wondering if I can add other fields to the csv such as phone numbers and addresses in addition to what was listed in your sample file?

    Thanks!

      Dear Keanen,

You most definitely can add the extra Fields into the CSV, only they need to EXACTLY match the Internal AD Name for that specific field.

For this reason, I would suggest you create a sample contact with ALL the required fields populated with unique data so they are easily identifiable. Then use CSVDE to Export that contact to CSV.

The Exported CSV will then Contain ALL the A/D field CN's, you can choose to either use this one for creating your contacts or just copy the fields you want to use into the CSV provided.

The intent of the files provided was just as a framework, so feel free to expand on it & then please share with the rest of us to hopefully make someone else out there's life a little easier.

      Kind Regards
      Johan

You mention that the CSV file you created is limited to 500 contacts. Is this due to a limitation of the import capabilities of Exchange, or is it simply because you just created the Excel file with 500 lines. In other words, if I'm importing a list of almost 4600 contacts (company merger) will it work fine, or will I have to break the file into 500-contact chunks?

      Hi,

It is simply a limitation on the number of lines to which I had applied the formulae that are used to generate the DN for each object. You can expand this sheet to take up as many contacts as you wish, although I would recommend crunching them in alphabetical batches as it will be easier to troubleshoot any failed imports.

Thanks for the tip - I think I will wait until there are a few more guarantees/safety measures associated with it. Looks like a great way to catch a virus to me.

Your choice for sure, however, just think that this isn't doing anything other than using the native capabilities of the technologies already deployed and their management tools and, ofcourse, you should have anti-malware software deployed on all of your enterprise servers to protect from such risks anyway.

Nice! Thanks for this tool! Importing contacts one by one is definitely a hassle and I could use the time I will save to do more productive, important things. Thanks again!
